He was born and studied in Milan.
When he was 20 he moved to London, where he started to take interest in commercial photography. Once he moved back to Milan, he started working as a photo assistant and then as a freelance photographer in the advertising sector. From 1982 to 1985 he was the Director of the Photography Department of Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome. In 1985 he co-founded Istituto Superiore di Fotografia, of which he had been the Didactic Director from the foundation to June 1992. Meanwhile he continued working as an advertising photographer.
In September 1992 in Milan he founded Istituto Italiano di Fotografia, of which he still is the Director and where he teaches Still life photography.
In 2018 he was awarded the AIF Lifetime Achievement Award.
